The Monthly South Dakota Voices for Peace Mission: South Dakota Voices for Peace builds power and enables healing in immigrant refugee, and Muslim communities by amplifying their voices in solidarity with all who dismantle bigotry and racism. Vision: We imagine a South Dakota that is diverse, inclusive, and anti-racist. Support our Work! October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. According to the National Organization for Women, abuse rates among immigrant women are as high as 49.8%, which is nearly three times the national average. Immigrants often are victims of crimes, but are afraid to report these crimes due to their immigration status being used against them. There are special provisions in the Violence Against Women Act that provide immigrant survivors of crime with pathways to U.S. citizenship. South Dakota Voices for Peace walks alongside survivors of crimes by providing them with free immigration legal services and representation, as well as connecting them with community, social, and medical resources. We are able to provide free legal services because of the generosity of people like you. Thank you! Click here to make a tax-deductible donation. How We Support Victims of Domestic Violence We are able to provide survivors with free legal services to help them on their pathway to becoming an American citizen. We have assisted battered spouses of U.S. citizen abusers in filing for green cards, and assisted undocumented victims of child abuse and attempted murder on their pathways to citizenship. We work with shelters for survivors and law enforcement agencies to provide holistic services to survivors of all immigration statuses. We have been a partner with SD Network Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault since 2019. Raising Community Awareness This month, our CEO Taneeza was able to speak with victims' assistants from across South Dakota to educate them about our legal services and the unique challenges that immigrant survivors of domestic violence face. We frequently engage with the community on the topic of domestic violence. Whether this is through speaking engagements or educational trainings we attend, we continually work to increase our awareness so we can best engage with and advocate for survivors of domestic abuse.
