South Dakota Voices for Peace (SDVFP) envisions a South Dakota that is diverse, inclusive and anti-racist. Our mission is to build power and enable healing in refugee, immigrant and Muslim communities by amplifying their voices and working in solidarity with all who dismantle bigotry and racism.
Board Members At-Large
Description
SDVFP Board of Directors is composed of at least five members and no more than 11 members. Remaining legal requirements of the Board of Directors are listed in the organizational bylaws.
SDVFP Board of Directors is the governing body, overseeing vision, mission, and internal operations of the organization. SDVFP Board members are elected for three-year terms. Board members hold overall fiscal and managerial oversight responsibility for SDVFP. They are charged with the supervision and oversight of the SDVFP mission. They are responsible for making decisions and assuring decisions are carried out in the manner intended. Ultimately, board members serve as ambassadors for SDVFP’s mission, inside and outside of organizational commitments.

Fundraising
Board Members are expected to consider SDVFP a top three philanthropic priority in their personal giving and are expected to make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that SDVFP can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations and individuals, SDVFP expects to have 100% of Board Members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity. It is also an expectation that Board Members will assist with fundraisers developed by the Staff and/or will develop Board initiated fundraisers.
Qualifications for Service
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about the South Dakota Voices For Peace mission and who has a track record for leadership and public service. Their accomplishments will allow them to attract other well-qualified Board Members.
Board members may serve as: At-Large Member (See Above), Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer/Secretary.

10 Basic Board Roles and Responsibilities:
- Determine mission and purposes.
- Provide leadership for the selection of the Executive Director. SDVFP Chair will serve as the Selection Committee Chair, which will be comprised of three SDVFP Board members and three SD Voices for Justice Board members.
- Support and evaluate the Executive Director.
- Ensure effective planning, implementation and monitoring of organizational goals.
- Determine which programs are consistent with the organization’s mission and monitor their effectiveness.
- Ensure adequate financial resources.
- Protect assets, ensure financial controls are in place and provide financial oversight.
- Build, orient and maintain a diverse Board and Staff that reflects the communities SDVFP serves.
- Ensure legal and ethical integrity.
- Enhance the organization’s public standing.
Board Member Responsibilities
- Be knowledgeable about and believe in the SDVFP mission, vision, programs, and events.
- Serve as a leading ambassador of SDVFP’s mission, programs, and services.
- Agree to a three-year Board term with the option of renewal for three consecutive terms.
- Regularly attend and prepare for Board meetings and important related meetings.
- Volunteer for and willingly accept assignments and complete them thoroughly and on time.
- Serve on at least one sub-committee, preferably as a chair, and attend committee meetings.
- Make a serious commitment to participate actively in Board and other SDVFP work.
- Prepare and/or approve necessary organizational policies.
- Fund-raise and Friend-raise on behalf of the organization.
- Stay informed about Board matters, prepare for meetings, and review and comment on issues of importance.
- Participate in creation of strategic plan and conduct annual review of the strategic plan.
- Get to know and build collegial working relationships with other Board members, Staff and SDVFP stakeholders.
- Respond to requests for feedback or decisions between meetings in a timely manner.
- Understand financial statements or commit to learning about nonprofit financial oversight.

- Must attend 85% of Board meetings
