RAMADAN MUBARAK! During this important time within the Muslim faith, join us in building power and enabling healing within the Muslim community. No matter your spiritual background, you can participate in the Islamic pillar of Zakhat (almsgiving) with a contribution to our work at South Dakota Voices for Peace. Thank you for your support! DONATE HERE! 5 WAYS TO BE ACCOMMODATING OF MUSLIMS DURING RAMADAN: 1. Avoid scheduling lunch meetings or meetings in the late afternoon. During the holy month of Ramadan (March 10th-April 9th this year), Muslims do not eat or drink during daylight hours. Be considerate of your colleagues and friends and avoid putting them in an uncomfortable situation by refraining from scheduling lunchtime meetings. 2. Give time and space for prayer. Regardless of the time of year, an important pillar of Islam is praying at five specific times each day. Giving Muslims time and space for prayer should be a consideration year-round, but especially during Ramadan, when worship and spiritual cleansing are the primary focus when not at work or school. 3. Know that evenings are important. Ramadan is a time where Muslims strive to grow even closer to God. This means that after sunset, there is extra worship that can last 2-3 hours each night. Be considerate of this and give Muslim friends, colleagues, and family the time for this important worship. 4. Be aware of Iftar. Muslims break their fast with a meal called Iftar, which occurs after the sun has set. 5. Make work or school schedules flexible. Understand that Ramadan is one of the most important times of year for Muslims. Be flexible and patient, understanding that people need time to pray and might be feeling irritable or tired due to fasting. DID YOU SEE US ON THE NEWS?
